Did we? Or is it that he found an image that happened to resonate and fixated on it as he expressed his darker half? Suppose that there is some subspecies of video game characters hiding in Los Angeles, as we are in New York--do they express guilt at every school shooting? A hidden cadre of film characters in Paris, do they wish they had never been made when some idiot sees Scarface once too many?

This is a tragedy, but we are not at fault. Feel remorse, feel sadness, but do not encourage others to feel guilt for sins out of their hands.

Not what I was trying to do do at all. This guy was a fucking nut, there's no doubt about that, and if it hadn't been The Dark Knight, it would've have been something else. But any bastard dressed in clown make up that strolls into a daycare, randomly starts stabbing, and tries to make an escape on a bicycle was certainly inspired by everyone's favorite psychopathic clown. There is no denying that. Should we feel guilty about it? No. Should we at acknowledge it? Definitely.
